A Bachelor of Business Administration in General Business is a steppingstone to many professions. Two of these professions are Marketing Management and Sales Management. The State of Minnesota’s Occupation Information Web site explained that marketing managers estimate the interest that potential consumers will have in their company’s services and commodities. Sales managers differ in that they focus on supervising and correlating the delivery of their company’s services and commodities (State).
JOB OUTLOOK
According to the OOH, marketing and sales management positions are some of the most
essential in business organizations. When businesses must scale down their workforce or
outsource some of their work, these managers are more likely to keep their jobs than others.
These jobs are very desirable so the competition is high. The graduates with the best chances for these positions should be creative, and skilled in both communications and computers (OOH).
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
For any Bachelor of Business Administration degree, students are required to complete a
minimum of 128 semester credit hours. At least 57 of these are non-business credits, including
the General Education credits, all of which can be fulfilled on the Idaho Falls campus. If other
desired classes are not offered on the Idaho Falls campus, the students can choose either to
commute, to pick other non-business classes in Idaho Falls, or wait till the class is offered to complete their degrees.
ADVANTAGES
Receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration in General Business can be completed entirely
on the Idaho Falls campus. This is a huge advantage for students who do not wish to commute
or relocate to Pocatello for academic purposes only. For specific degrees, such as Finance and
Management, all but about two to six of the final upper division elective classes can be taken in Idaho Falls. The class schedules and class offerings by semester on the Idaho Falls campus work well for about half of the Business students we interviewed.
DISADVANTAGES
The choices for class times and scheduling on the Idaho Falls campus are much more limited
than on the Pocatello campus. Timing is also an issue for students who want to graduate
within a certain time frame. If they do not wish to commute to Pocatello to fit their time
schedules, then the students will often have to postpone a semester or two to wait for their
desired classes or specific class times to become available in Idaho Falls. Their other option is to move to Pocatello to complete their degrees. Chris Mangelson, a Business Management
major, said that he had to relocate from Idaho Falls to Pocatello after classes in Idaho
Falls were cut. Now he’s traveling from Pocatello to Idaho Falls once a week for a class
he needs (Mangelson).
